Manta Rota
The beach of Manta Rota is part of the largest sandy region of the Algarve, which extends from the estuary of the Guadiana River to the Cacela peninsula. West of Manta Rota lies the beach Cacela Velha, also known as the beach of Cacela, and to the east lies Praia da Lota, also known as the beach of Alto or Sitio do Alto. The climate is similar to that of the rest of the eastern coast of the Algarve. The summers are long, hot and dry, with an average temperature of 28/30°C in July and August. In the summer, one can find the most Mediterranean climate of Portugal right here, with a significant number of tropical nights (i.e. during the night, the temperature does not drop below 20°C). One of the characteristics of the eastern coast of the Algarve is the strong influence of the east wind. Usually, the east wind causes a significant rise of the sea water temperature, which has reached 28°C over the past years. Those days where on the east wind clearly makes itself felt are also called "levante" days. The beach of Manta Rota is located on the eastern edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, an important wetland and observation point for migratory birds. From this beach you can enjoy walks along the Ria Formosa to the historic village of Cacela Velha and admire the beautiful environment, including fossil cliffs, traces of ancient Roman streets and diverse ecosystems, such as the dunes or swamps. Ribeira de Cacela holds an important fossil site, with unique features on national and European level. The flora and fauna are extremely varied, including a remarkably large number of waterfowl species and chameleon population. The Cacela peninsula extends from the dunes and the beach of Manta Rota to the east; the sandbar separates the sea from the estuary. In 2009, the beach of Cacela Velha was named one of the ten best beaches in Europe for long walks. Because it is so remote, the sandy peninsula is also visited by naturists and quite popular among the gay and lesbian community. Every year, in late August, a festival is held in honour of St. John da Degola, with its particular highlight on the morning of August 29, nicknamed the "holy dip"; a tradition from the old days when the people of Serra do Caldeirão used to travel to the coast and bathe in the ocean. The beach is certified with the blue flag and usually has two well-equipped concessions. For the past few years, there is also supporting equipment available for disabled guests. The process of urban and environmental redevelopment of the beach was concluded in 2007, providing elevated wooden walkways, paved parking lots to the east and west, a town square, rehabilitation of the dunes and the opening of new shops and bars. In 2008, the first summer beach club of the east coast of the Algarve was opened at the initiative of the Municipality, hosting several big names from the national and international music and dance scene. In the summer of 2010, the second beach club of Manta Rota was opened. In 2011, the environmental association Quercus named the beach of Manta Rota as one of the best beaches in the country. In and around Manta Rota there are several accommodations (guest houses, inns, country guesthouses, hotels, aparthotels) and currently there are new high quality accommodations under development. There are also five golf courses: Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima (near the village Fábrica), Monte Rey and Benamor (borough of Conceição de Tavira) and Castro Marim. The gastronomy in this eastern region of the Algarve is quite vast. The local restaurants mainly serve dishes consisting of fresh fish, shellfish, octopus and squid, mostly captured in the vicinity; typical ingredients of the traditional cuisine. But this vast gastronomy has a lot more to offer, including some unique dishes such as cold soups and salads (typical gazpacho from the Algarve, fresh roe salad and tuna salad), corn porridge with clams, razor clams with beans and bread soup with free-range chicken.
