Monte Gordo is a beautiful beach with bright sand and clear, warm water. Its unique features have been attracting a large number of foreign tourists since the 60s. One of the first hotels in the Algarve was built here, making Praia de Monte Gordo the driving force that turned a small fishing village into an international tourist centre, in just a few decades. In the past few years, a lot of work has been done to make the beach accessible to everyone. Proper paths have been laid out for disabled bathers and during the summer season there are amphibious wheelchairs (also known as "tiralots") available, which give disabled swimmers the chance to enjoy the warm water in the bay, unparalleled elsewhere in the Algarve. The various snack bars and restaurants offer the possibility to enjoy a meal or a refreshing drink without leaving the beach. This beach is perfect for a long walk, not just for those wanting to keep fit, but also for who just wants to relax and recharge for another year of work. The Blue Flag of Europe testifies to the quality of this beach, which is "bordered" by a long promenade laid out in typical Portuguese cobblestones.
